• The is the Caul, a dam built across the river to provide power for a water mill.  The Nith is a tidal river up to the Caul but not beyond.

• The mill water wheel has gone too, but the building has been converted to the Burns Centre - an attractive film theatre, restaurant and audio-visual display of the town in the time of Robert Burns.
